But, it wasn’t all fun and games.  I began gaining weight, and before long, the scale was reading nearly 30 pounds more than it did on my wedding day. And while at this point it was several years later, I woke up one day not recognizing myself in the mirror.  It all seemed like it happened so quickly—within the blink of an eye. Has that ever happened to you?

Those extra 30 pounds I was carrying seemed to affect just about everything in my life, from my relationship with my wife to my confidence to my work performance.  I was often too tired and rundown to play with my two beautiful daughters... I just wasn’t the same “Joel” anymore, and folks close to me really started to notice.  It was embarrassing.

So, instead of feeling sorry for myself, I decided I needed to do something about it. I began exercising again, and I was being more selective with my food choices. But that alone didn’t seem to be getting me where I wanted to be.  Plus, I missed all my favorite carbs, and needless to say, having my “own food” on Sundays while everyone else was enjoying a home-cooked, carb-heavy Italian meal was a drag.  There’s nothing worse than feeling left out or like an oddball, especially at family gatherings.

You see, when you eat carbs, they can either be stored in muscle tissue and the liver as a form of energy called “glycogen,” or they can be converted to unattractive body fat, often stored in all your least favorite areas (your waist, hips, thighs, etc.).

Now, where you ultimately store your carbs is heavily impacted by your body’s sensitivity to a hormone called insulin.  Here’s how it works:

When you eat carbs, your body breaks them down to simple sugars which are then released into your blood.  Insulin then “partitions” the sugar from your blood to its final destination—either muscle tissue (to be stored as glycogen energy), or to body fat.

When your body is very sensitive to insulin, more carbs are directed to your muscle tissue and less will be stored as fat.  Unfortunately, due to years of a sedentary lifestyle and eating a diet full of processed carbohydrates, most people aren’t as sensitive to insulin as they could be...and that certainly included me.

Knowing this, I asked Shawn to search high and low for the latest and greatest ingredients to support healthy insulin levels and enhanced insulin sensitivity with the goal of creating a state-of-the-art nutrient-partitioning formula that my family and I could personally test and use.

1. Just how effective is Zychrome®?  In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study conducted by Dr. Jain of Louisiana State University and published in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research, 24 participants took 400 micrograms of Zychrome® daily for 12 weeks and ultimately experienced significantly improved fasting insulin levels and insulin sensitivity.2 

Furthermore, these improvements were substantially greater than those seen by participants taking chromium picolinate, a much more common, but less effective and cheaper form of chromium that manufacturers commonly use to pad their margins.

2. Next up is Cinnamomum Cassia, a powerful extract harvested from Indonesian cinnamon bark that has been shown to have remarkable effects on both blood sugar and carbohydrate tolerance alike. For example, in a study conducted at the Swedish University of Lund, subjects demonstrated a significant increase in their body’s ability to metabolize and process carbohydrates while at the same time reducing insulin and increasing another key nutrient-partitioning hormone called GLP-1.3

You’ll also be happy to know that Cinnamomum Cassia is the exact same form of cinnamon used in clinical research. It is highly pure, does not undergo any irradiation whatsoever, and is concentrated by 2400% to contain robust levels of the active ingredients, known as polyphenols, for exceptional effectiveness.

In fact, it takes 25 pounds of cinnamon bark to make a single pound of this powerfully effective extract!

In the end, this means you don’t have to worry about choking down TWELVE, 250mg capsules of cinnamon daily to get the same level of active ingredients. Instead, with this highly concentrated extract, just 100mg, twice a day, does the trick.

3. The third superstar in this premium formula is Berberine, a rare plant alkaloid that has been used for hundreds of years in Asia due to its ability to promote healthy blood sugar levels. Berberine works slightly different by activating a key nutrient-partitioning enzyme called AMPK (the master metabolic regulator of the body), which directs the uptake of carbs to lean muscle for use as energy, instead of being stored as ugly old body fat.4,5

Evidence of Berberine’s effectiveness is found in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in the leading journal Metabolism. In the study, participants who supplemented with Berberine experienced a significant improvement in fasting blood sugar compared to the control group, along with additional improvements in insulin sensitivity.6

4. The fourth ingredient, Naringin (a flavanone naturally found in very small amounts in grapefruits and other citrus fruits), is one that works hand-in-hand with the superstar ingredient we just mentioned, Berberine.

You see, when taken in higher amounts, Naringin has been shown to inhibit P-glycoprotein, a compound that can significantly reduce the absorption of Berberine.  In the end, by inhibiting P-glycoprotein, Naringin can significantly increase Berberine’s absorption, and ultimately YOUR results.7,8

5. Lastly is Benfotiamine, a powerful derivative of thiamine, more commonly known as vitamin B1. Not only does Benfotiamine play an important role in carbohydrate regulation, but it also reduces the production of damaging AGEs within the body’s cells.9–11

AGEs are toxic compounds caused by elevated blood sugar that have been associated with cellular aging, suboptimal glucose function, as well as higher levels of oxidative damage to healthy cells.12–14

So what does all of this mean to you?
